What is SSL?

SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, is a protocol for establishing a secured link between a web server and a browser. This protocol helps ensure that all data transmitted between the server and client remains encrypted, thereby safeguarding sensitive information such as credit card numbers, usernames, and passwords. SSL provides authentication, confidentiality, and data integrity for online communications.

How SSL Works

SSL operates through a process called the SSL handshake, which involves several key steps:

  2. Server Response: The server responds with its SSL certificate, containing the public key and its identity.

  4. Session Key Creation: After validation, the client generates a session key for encrypting the data, encrypts it with the server’s public key, and sends it to the server.
  5. Secure Connection: Both client and server use this session key to encrypt and decrypt transmitted data throughout the session.

SSL vs. TLS

  • More secure message integrity checks.

Today, SSL refers to a deprecated protocol, while TLS is the industry standard for secure communications.
